Base Tesla Model S Updated, Boasts of Extended Range, Improved PerformanceThe drawback with the new base version of the Tesla Model S is that it’s going to cost a shade over $5,000 more than the previous entry-level electric sedan.  But then again, you’ll be getting improved range and improved performance from the Model S 70D, which quietly became available for order earlier today.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is well-known for his flashy, splashy announcements, but this time around, he made the Model S 70D available with little advance notice.  The new base version of the Model S is capable of an all-electric range of 240 miles per charge, which is slightly more than the previous figure of 205 miles.  It’s also capable of going from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, thanks to its dual-motor setup.  And since Musk singled out all-wheel drive as a feature customers want the most, the 70D comes with AWD as standard, as well as Tesla’s “autopilot” safety feature.

With Tesla scheduled to release the Model X crossover sometime in the third quarter of 2015, it does seem understandable that the company wants people to keep paying attention to the Model S.  Tesla’s “range anxiety” update, unfortunately, fell a bit flat for a lot of pundits, as opposed to October 2014’s “D” launch event, which saw the debut of the higher-performance P85D with all-wheel drive and two electric motors.  Keeping that launch in mind, it looks like Tesla’s done the right thing, introducing a new base version of the Model S with features that customers really do want, and keeping pricing at a comparatively reasonable $75,750.
